The FreeHer Institute has released “Against Prison Architecture,” a new resource to help organizers intervene in the architecture and design process for new prison, jail, and detention center construction.
The toolkit, co-authored by IEMI’s Carceral Infrastructure Project attorney Joan Steffen, explains the role architecture and design companies can play in perpetuating mass incarceration and outlines tools to stall new construction during the design phase. IEMI has worked with coalition partner No New Prisons Illinois to pursue design-based advocacy tactics outlined in the new resource.
