IEMI-Backed ‘No New Prisons’ Campaign in Illinois Rallies outside Capital Development Board, Dept. of Corrections Meeting on $1.1B Prison Project

IL rally

CHICAGO, IL – In late August, members of the No New Prisons Illinois campaign, which is working to resist the construction of a $1.1B state prison complex, held a rally outside a meeting by Illinois’ Capital Development Board and Department of Corrections (IDOC) to recruit construction companies, architects, and other contractors for the prison project.

Rally organizers aimed to raise awareness about the deteriorating conditions at Logan Correctional Center and the ongoing hunger strike at Lawrence Correctional Center, both IDOC prisons. The rally also called for greater state investment in life-affirming resources, like food, housing, and employment, instead of spending on new prisons.
